Rick Berg told North Dakota local television station Valley News Live that he currently does not support the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) before Congress, which fights domestic abuse across the country. Check out the news video here.
The legislation is set to expire and needs re-approval from Congress to move forward, and yet still Berg is playing politics and fence-sitting on the issue.
While Berg refused to support the important legislation, Heidi Heitkamp toured statewide highlighting her record as North Dakota’s Attorney General, at which time she worked with local police and prosecutors to increase training and prevention of domestic abuse. Heidi has pledged to support the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
UPDATE:
After taking heat for refusing to say if he would support the Violence Against Women Act, Berg’s campaign flipped his position. Berg told KVLY that he would support the measure even though just hours earlier Berg told the same station that he wouldn’t “take a position on the bill.” Berg still won’t explain why he voted as a state legislator to allow insurance companies to discriminate against victims of domestic violence by labeling it a ‘preexisting condition’.
